Return of the old school summer blockbuster movie (featured)

So far, this summer of movie blockbusters has lived up to the hype. Have we gotten any truly wonderful cinema? No way. Have we gotten tons of explosions, plot holes that make zero sense and so-so acting? Yes! And I'm here for it.

This is what summer movies were like when I was a lot younger. Yes, there's a space for films that move me and make me think about my place in the world. But I prefer to see those in the fall or the winter.

The movie theater, in my opinion, is a reprieve from hot weather in the summer time. We go to cool off and watch effects-driven films and leave happy, entertained, and full of popcorn.

I haven't seen every movie this summer, but the ones I have watched have followed this type of formula. "Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning" was the logical conclusion to the franchise — where Tom Cruise has to save the world. We've come a long way from retrieving a NOC list as the main plot device.

"F1" wasn't exactly a totally accurate film about the sport, but it was a great intro into that world and was a reminder that Brad Pitt is one of the top charisma-driven actors of my lifetime.

"Jurassic World Rebirth" was not a good movie at all in the traditional sense. But it had some nice homages to "Jurassic Park" and the cast was excellent. And the movies I haven't seen like "Thunderbolts" and "Ballerina" have been — from what I've heard — great breaks from reality.

So way to go, Hollywood! Whatever you're doing this summer is working!
